I'm not usually interested in war stories but this children's book about some WWII Polish soldiers who adopted a Syrian Brown Bear received a lot of good reviews. The story was mostly about the relationship between the soldiers and the bear they loved so much, but there was plenty of information about military life and fighting for children who are war story fans! The book is only 142 pages but can be difficult for young readers who don't have the vocabulary for the geography or history of WWII.

Under The Mesquite by Guadalupe Garcia McCall
This novel was a new style for me. I don't usually read novels in verse or diaries but I'm really glad I read this one. It is about a young Mexican woman, Lupita, living in the U.S. and about adjusting to life here while still keeping strong ties with her homeland. Lupita copes with the joys and struggles of a large family, attending high school, and her mother's illness. This beautiful novel gives a real sense of hope and purpose to everyone dealing with difficulties in their life. It is an easy read and well worth it!
